Athens, Georgia



Athens, Georgia is the home to R.E.M. and the B-52s, the city Rolling Stone named "#1 College Music Scene in America."

The University of Georgia is located in this college town and is responsible for the initial growth of the city. 

The Athens music scene grew in the early 1970s and later during the 1980s with the Georgia Theatre and 40 Watt Club as the bands R.E.M. and the B-52's scored breakout hits. Other notable bands were Widespread Panic, Dreams So Real, Indigo Girls, Matthew Sweet, The Method Actors, Love Tractor, Pylon, Flat Duo Jets, The Primates, Modern Skirts, The Whigs, and Corey Smith.

The remaining one of two double barreled cannons produced during the American Civil War is located here.
