Captain William Bowen built the Bowen Plantation House in 1787.  The Virginia native came to this area to live on land grants he earned for his services in the military during the Revolutionary War.  Captain Bowen and his wife, Mary, brought four young children with them to the frontier, and eventually the family grew to ten members.

The Bowen family was very prominent in the area. Captain Bowen was a veteran of three wars, and his grandson was the 15th governor of Tennessee from 1851-1853.  After restoration, the Bowen Plantation House was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes in 1977.
