Gallatin, Tennessee



Gallatin is a city in and the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee. Named for U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, the city was established and made the county seat of Sumner County in 1802.

Abraham Alfonse Albert Gallatin (1761 – 1849) was a Swiss-American ethnologist, linguist, founder of New York University, politician, diplomat, congressman, Senator and the longest-serving United States Secretary of the Treasury. In 1831, he founded the University of the City of New York, now New York University.
